From worst to first
In 2009, DBS Bank was rated one of the worst banks in its region. By 2018, Global Finance had named it Best Bank in the World.
That turnaround didn't come from a new process or a bigger change programme. It came from leadership who encouraged a challenging of old norms and by giving responsibility for change to those that could directly influence it every single day, middle managers and their teams.
They built capabilities, removed barriers to getting work done and generated a workplace culture that people were proud to be part of.
Accountability for culture is shared. Leaders role-model it, managers build it, employees own it. Skip any one of them and the change stalls and remains something that is always talked about, but never achieved.
